RIVER

Interestingly, although I have been a mountain rescuer for many years, the first person that I had saved in my life was a drowning one...

It was about 48 years ago, during a school camp. We all went to have a look at a river, swollen after heavy rains, next to the power plant. Suddenly, I heard a cry. One of the girls fell down from a slippery bank into the water and was immediately carried by the rapid current. I was standing close to the bank, some meters down the river. Without thinking, I slid down the bank, holding onto the low-hanging tree branches. By the time she was being carried by me, I was ready to grab her clothes and pull her to the bank. Only then, the rest of the group realised what was going on and helped us climb up the slope. I was lucky! If I didn't grab her then, there would be no other chance. Just in front of me the river was narrowing and the concrete blocks led it to the turbines of the power plant...

In the evening of the same day there was a disco organised in the countryside, which part of the camp was going to attend. I wanted to go there badly, but the head of the camp told me I was too immature to attend such events. It was true that I was much younger than most children there...

I know that today this girl lives. She is in her 50s, she's got a husband and two wonderful sons. They live in the USA.
